Rule #1: Allow yourself to sit with your fear for 2-3 minutes at a time
Think of this like a less intense form of “exposure therapy”. Whenever you’re feeling fear, breathe with it and say to yourself “It’s okay. I’m feeling lousy, but emotions are like the ocean - the waves ebb and flow.” Taking the time to acknowledge your fear, and that it will pass makes it easier to get over the next time that fears comes up.

Rule #2: Use humour to deflate your worst fears
Our brain has a natural ability to freak out over “What ifs”. Maybe you have a fear of public speaking like I did, and one of your worries is “What if everyone laughs at me?” Take that and run with it! Okay, what if everyone laughs at you. What if your first boyfriend/girlfriend is in the audience and heckles you? Exaggerating your fears in a way that makes you laugh can take away their power to hurt you.

Rule #3: Appreciate your courage
Catch yourself doing something good! Every time you thrust through your fright, you’re building up psychological robustness. Encourage yourself to achieve more. Whenever you do feel afraid, don’t be hard on yourself. Instead, think of what advice you would give to your best friend if they had this problem.
